Special Program: Author and Poet Mieko Kawakami in Conversation with Author Roland Kelts
Asia Society Japan Center presents their first literature program, featuring feminist author and poet Mieko Kawakami (Breasts and Eggs) in conversation with Japanese American author and editor Roland Kelts. The two will discuss Breasts and Eggs, Kawakami’s roots in Osaka, and her exquisite short stories — some of which have been translated into English and published in the English-language literary journal Monkey Business, whose newly revived version Monkey debuts this month. Monkey founding editor, scholar, and translator Motoyuki Shibata will introduce their conversation.
This conversation takes place October 17, 8 p.m. Central Time.

Mind the Gap 16: Virtual Edition
On October 5, Dance Source Houston hosted a virtual Mind the Gap performance featuring original solo works by local dancemakers Josh Eguia, Karen Imas, Patricia Solorzano, Emalie Vann Thok, and Ke’Ron Wilson. We want to particularly call out the performance Home Rom (Home Dance) Homrong (Overture): A Contemporary Cambodian Theater Dance by Emalie Vann Thok — a longtime Asia Society Texas Center volunteer and docent!
Moon Festival with Wu Man
In this musical celebration of the Mid-Autumn “Moon” Fetival, Wu Man guides audiences through the sounds and history of these long-standing festivities culminating in the world premiere of “Reflections on Blue Lake,” written by Wu Man and performed with the renowned Kronos Quartet. The quartet joined Asia Society Texas Center last year for a performance of their A Thousand Thoughts documentary, but they’re not the only familiar faces in this video — keep an eye out around the 10-minute mark for a guest appearance by Wu Wei, the sheng virtuoso who performed with us last fall!
