The Roosevelt Row area of downtown Phoenix is fast becoming an epicenter for craft beer fans. Soon, there will be a new spot to enjoy a beer, although the service style at the new bar will be different than customers might expect.
Tap That Downtown, a craft beer and wine bar opening soon on Fifth Street just south of Roosevelt Street, will invite customers to come in and pour themselves a pint.
An entire wall of the bar will feature 35 tap handles where customers can serve themselves. Of the total 35 taps, 30 will feature craft beer and five will pour wine.

The new self-pour bar is in the final stages of construction and the owners hope to welcome customers for dine-in and takeout service in early to mid-November.
What to know about Tap That Downtown
For craft beer lovers tuned in to Phoenix’s beer scene, the bar’s name might sound familiar. But co-owner Roshiem Austin says the bar is not related to the Tap That AZ Podcast, hosted by Eric Walters — though Austin hopes to record an episode at the bar once it’s open.
Tap That Downtown has been in the works for the past three years, Austin says. He, along with Wyndi Austin, Delyn Hu and Stephen Hu worked together to make the dream a reality.
Austin was born and raised in Arizona and recently moved to California for a few years. It was there he discovered self-pour bars and fell in love with the concept. So, upon his return to his home state, Austin decided to bring the idea back to Arizona.
Then the hunt began for the perfect building. The team looked in Gilbert and Mesa before finding the location in downtown Phoenix: a 1915 historic bungalow along Roosevelt Row. The bungalow is part of The Blocks of Roosevelt Row, a project from real estate company Desert Viking Development.
When designing the space, it was important to maintain the history of the building while creating a modern space, Austin says.
“We wanted to keep the feel of the historical charm of the bungalow,” he says.
The house features two fireplaces, which will be surrounded by lounge seating and exposed brick walls. A mix of high top bar tables and lower dining tables will fill the rest of the space. Front and back patios will offer outside seats with two murals painted by local artist Hugo Medina.

The ceiling of the building was specially designed to provide good acoustics for live music and DJ nights, which the team plans to host a couple times per month, Austin says.
“We kept the height of the ceiling to have really good, rich sound in there and we added wood beams to hold the acoustic sound,” he says.
Austin hopes to host shows for fans of all different styles of music.
“It’s a very eclectic neighborhood so we’ll have some Top 40s DJs, some old-school music, I’m partial to hip hop, it’ll be a little bit of something for everyone,” he says.
Austin hopes Tap That Downtown will serve multiple purposes for the community from being a space to watch a local band, to providing a place to get some work done. The drinks menu will include some non-alcoholic options and Wi-Fi and electrical outlets will be available for those who want to bring their laptops.

Because of the timing of the bar’s opening, the beer list will feature some fall beers and Oktoberfest-style brews, to begin with. But the tap wall of 30 different beers will be far from stagnant, Austin says. He hopes to rotate beers seasonally and feature new and exciting brews from local Arizona breweries.

The selection will focus on local options, with beers from O.H.S.O., PHX Beer Co., 12 West Brewing Company on the list. Tap That Downtown’s neighbors, Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company and newly-opened Greenwood Brewing are also planned to have spots on the menu.
Along with beer, Tap That Downtown will also offer wine and cider from Tempe-based Crush Craft Cider.
To accompany the extensive list of beverages, Tap That Downtown’s food menu will be curated to complement the beers on tap, Austin says. Just as customers might have smaller samples of multiple different beers, the menu offers small bite options to try with different drinks.
Breakfast, including mimosas and micheladas, will be available on weekends and a food menu will be available for lunch and dinner.
The food menu will feature flavors of the Southwest blended with a little California flare — think burrito bowls, tacos, avocado toast and salads. Also, look for a rotating flatbread designed to complement the seasonal beers on tap. For wine lovers, pairings will include charcuterie and cheese boards as well.
One food option Austin can’t wait for customers to try is a Korean Kobe beef street taco.
“This is taco country,” Austin says. “So we wanted to bring tacos with a twist.”
He’s also excited for wings in flavors like Italian garlic and onion or mango habanero.
Opening a new business, let alone a beer bar, during the coronavirus pandemic, has not been easy, Austin says.
The original plan was to open in June. Now, Tap That Downtown is expected to open in early to mid-November.
