Tom Hanks may not be an Anglo regular, but he pops up every once in a while being known around the world. We most recently reported on him starring in the Fred Rogers biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, opposite Welsh actor Matthew Rhys.
This time around, we’ll see him perform opposite a little girl in the Western drama News of the World, reports Deadline. Based on Paulette Jiles‘ 2016 novel, the story revolves around a widowed Civil War veteran, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks). He volunteers to rescue a kidnapped girl (Helena Zengel) and bring her home to her aunt and uncle.
In the new trailer, we don’t see him go to collect her, but we do get an idea of how hard the return trip is going to be, with the two running into bandits. The outlaws also want her, offering to pay him, which he replies, “She’s not for sale.” It then turns into a chase, with one of the men yelling after him, “She ain’t worth dying for!!”
This little girl is lost, and he is willing to put his life on the line for her:
If Zengel is new to you, she’s a 12-year-old German actress. Prior to working with Hanks, she starred in 2019’s System Crasher.
Here’s a peek at the family drama, where she stars as a child who struggles with impulse control:
The screenplay for News of the World is written by Luke Davies (Lion) and directed by Paul Greengrass (Jason Bourne). You can look for the movie on December 25.
